Pipestone River Provincial Park Canoe Route - July 2010

On July 1, 2010 our group of 4 paddlers embarked on an 8 day canoe expedition through portions of the Pipestone River Provincial Park. The trip saw us navigate 37 sets of rapids over a 95km stretch of remote Northern Ontario wilderness. We encountered a number of water falls/ledges and we were required to traverse many of the 16 marked portages during our journey.

Itinerary Overview

We departed the Thunder Bay dispatch point on Thursday July 1, 2010 at approximately 7:00 am EST. We arrived in Pickle Lake at our outfitters base of operation at approximately 1:30 pm EST, where Pickle Lake Outposts staff shuttled us 150km north to the Pipestone River put-in at bridge crossing on Highway 808 (North Road). We made our first camp of the trip on an island, after a short paddle of less than 1km. From there we travelled by canoe for 5 days before arriving at an outpost cabin on Assin Lake, one full day ahead of schedule. We spent the night at the cabin, and were flown by float plane back to Pickle Lake in the late afternoon of July 7.

Hi there, we are thinking about canoeing/fishin g on the Pipestone this summer. I was wondering how fast the rapids are at the beginning of your route? If we have aluminum canoes can we shoot the rapids or would they be too violent to attempt? Just trying to get a sense of whether the portages are necessary or optional? thank you!

Hello Mr. Kokanie.
I am an experienced guide who is interested in shooting the Pipestone this summer.

Is there any chance you would be so kind as to let me phone you and pick your paddling brains for a few minutes? It would be greatly appreciated.

#4 How I made the Map/Guide BooksKen 2014-05-30 13:14

Hey Ken I was wounding what maps you use to make you guide books with, also what software you use to make your detailed circles. You have by far the best map sets if have run across and would like to duplicate them as best as I can for my own use. Thanks in advance. -Andy

Maps used are the digitized raster versions of the old NRCAN 1:50000 maps. Using Adobe Photoshop I cut-out map profiles needed to create the route guide book, and apply mark-ups. Similarly I use Photoshop to cut out detailed "blow-ups" and work some magic to sharpen the resulting image.

Long and short, they are "artwork" not intended for use as navigational tool but rather as a guide to the river route.

Andrew,

Glad you enjoyed the show. We haven't ventured up there since 2010, but would definitely do that route again.

The problem is.... there are so many other rivers in Northwestern Ontario on the list.
